What goes wrong when a project manager is selected
A CV tells you what someone has done. An interview tells you how someone talks about themselves. Neither tells you how someone leads when the steering committee is unhappy, a supplier misses its date and the plan has already slipped twice.
That is where a project is decided. Selection is about paper, execution is about behaviour.
What a wrong placement costs
- Selection on CV and interview. You look at the past while you need to know about behaviour under pressure.
- Invisible leadership gaps. How someone decides, communicates and keeps a team moving only shows when things go wrong.
- Slow onboarding and fast friction. Long stabilization, escalations and loss of momentum in exactly the phase where that is most expensive.
- Six figures. A wrong placement costs months of work and budget, and then the time to do it again.
Traditional agencies optimize for speed. That makes sense for them: they are judged on the number of candidates they put forward. The execution risk stays with you.
What we do differently
We do not send CVs. We map your project context first, define the leadership behaviour it calls for and assess project managers against those requirements. Only then comes a proposal, usually two or three people rather than a list.
| Traditional agency | NLPM |
|---|---|
| Selection on CV and availability | Qualification on behaviour and context |
| Large, unverified database | Small, assessed group |
| Speed over fit | Fit before placement |
| Many profiles, you pick | A short selection with reasoning |
What that assessment looks like is set out in our qualification approach. How an assignment runs is described in the process.
When we fit
- Complex projects in industry, IT or construction
- Programs with high stakeholder pressure
- Projects where the cost of failure is high
- Organizations that use external project managers regularly
- Earlier placements that led to friction
When we do not
- Assignments with low complexity or a short duration
- You need a CV tomorrow
- Speed weighs heavier than strategic fit
- A standard recruitment process is enough
If it does not fit, we say so straight away. That is cheaper for you and fairer to the project manager.
What we deliberately do not do
- No personality tests. No psychological diagnosis, no abstract profile. We look at observable behaviour in a project context.
- No black-box scoring. Every dimension we assess can be explained and is specific to the project.
- No single fit score. We never reduce anyone to one number. Qualification supports your decision, you take it yourself.
- No AI without interpretation. Data drives the process, a person weighs the outcome.
- No speed over fit. We work with a limited number of clients at a time.
- No volume placement. Not every request leads to a placement.
